After having lunch, we stopped by Marufuku Coffee Sennichimae Honten (丸福珈琲店 千日前本店) for dessert. This is the flagship store of Marufuku Coffee.
About 80 years have passed since Marufuku Coffee was founded by Tadao Ibuki in Osaka in 1934. What started as a small coffee shop has grown into a popular café chain with numerous branches, not only in Osaka but also in other areas, including Tokyo. The brand continues to expand even today.
While all Marufuku Coffee locations are loved by many, the flagship store stands out for its unique and historic ambiance. The building exudes a sense of history, and stepping inside feels like being transported back to the Showa era.
The shop can accommodate up to 150 customers across two floors. However, when we arrived, every table was occupied. After waiting for a few minutes, a staff member dressed in a charming maid-style uniform guided us to our seats.
When it comes to Marufuku Coffee, their strong coffee is a highlight. Naturally, we ordered coffee-based drinks. I chose a cafe au lait float. The coffee is pre-sweetened with sugar and syrup, so if you prefer your drink unsweetened, be sure to request “no sugar” when placing your order. (Staff sometimes ask if you’d like sugar when taking your order.) The iced café au lait was smooth and creamy, and the ice cream added a delightful touch. If you’re not a fan of strong black coffee, I recommend the café au lait for a milder experience.
Next, we tried their coffee roll cake. The sponge cake, made with Marufuku’s coffee, is rolled with whipped cream infused with the bitter notes of café au lait, then coated in chocolate. The rich aroma of coffee was fantastic. If you want to fully savor Marufuku’s coffee, this cake is a must-try.
By the way, I previously had breakfast at Ibuki Coffee-ten, the origin of Marufuku Coffee. It’s a great shop as well!
