Ginza: Delicious Deep Fried Oysters at Sansyuya (三州屋) – A Historic Gem

Tokyo

I went to Ginza to have deep-fried oysters. Though there are several branches of Sanshuya (三州屋) in Tokyo, the Ginza branch is renowned for its deep-fried oysters. They started their business in 1968, and the restaurant’s appearance and interior reflect its long history. I arrived just after 11 a.m. because I had heard that was their opening time, but they weren’t open yet. I returned around 11:20, and by then, they had opened, with half of the seats already occupied.

Built in 1968.

The Ginza branch can be a bit hard to find because it’s located slightly off the main street. You might pass it without noticing.

However, the location isn’t bad. There’s a MUJI store nearby, and although the restaurant doesn’t face the street directly, they have placed a signboard on the sidewalk to help guide you.

They even have a sign above your head.

The restaurant spans two floors. The first floor has an L-shaped counter and several square tables, while the menu is displayed on the wall. There’s also a whiteboard with additional menu items. Since it was Saturday, many customers were enjoying alcoholic drinks.

As soon as I ordered the deep fried oysters set, pickles were served. They were pickled turnips, with a strong flavor. They paired perfectly with rice.

Pickles

I expected my food to take some time to arrive, but everything was served quickly: the deep-fried oysters, rice, and miso soup, which was made with red miso.

At first, I was a little disappointed because the deep-fried oysters were smaller than I had expected. However, they were packed with rich oyster flavor and delicious. I found myself wanting more. The shredded cabbage and salad were also great. The oysters were served with mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and soy sauce – no tartar sauce.

Though I usually don’t eat deep-fried oysters with soy sauce, this time, it worked surprisingly well.

By the way, the deep-fried oysters set with rice, miso soup, and pickles costs 1350 yen. If you prefer just the deep-fried oysters without the sides, it’s 1100 yen. They also offer two other oyster dishes: baked oysters with salt (かき塩焼き, 650 yen) and warm tofu with oysters (かき豆腐, 600 yen). These also sound delicious!
