I frequent Iwate Ginga Plaza (いわて銀河プラザ) for seafood products, meats, and alcoholic beverages, but this time, I went to try something I hadn’t eaten yet. Located between Ginza and Tsukiji, this shop is always busy no matter when you visit.
It’s right across from Kabuki-za and very close to Higashi-Ginza Station, with Tsukiji Station also nearby. And this is the thing. Koiwai Soft Serve. At one point, soft serve ice cream was sold at antenna shops around the Ginza area as a kind of competition. Now, not many places still offer it, but Iwate Ginga Plaza is still going strong.
This ticket vending machine system allows you to buy a ticket and give it to the staff. In addition to soft serve, there are also drinks like coffee available.
Here’s what the eat-in space looks like. There are three counter seats and a few benches, but it’s cramped. There’s space for about ten people to sit, and the rest have to eat standing up.
This time, I came with strong determination to try this specific item: the limited-time soy sauce soft serve. It’s made using soy sauce from Fujiyu Soy Sauce.
This is the Soy Sauce Soft Mix S. The small size is just the right amount. It’s supposed to be a mix of Koiwai soft serve and soy sauce soft serve, but at first glance, the colors are the same. In the photos, it looks a bit brownish, but when I saw it in front of me, both looked white. The staff explained, “This one is the soy sauce.”
When I looked at the photos again, I was surprised at how brown it looks—maybe because of the lighting? The soy sauce soft serve had a slightly thicker consistency with a distinct roasted caramel-like flavor. However, it wasn’t too sweet, and the subtle saltiness provided a delicate balance. The aftertaste was distinctly soy sauce, making me crave sashimi! :p The Koiwai soft serve, on the other hand, was a gentle milk flavor.
It wasn’t specified how long this would be available, so I recommend confirming with the shop directly. en if this limited-time offer has ended, I think they will have another limited-time soft serve. And of course, Koiwai milk soft serve is enough excellent.
