I recently visited Choushiya (チヨウシ屋), a popular croquette shop in Ginza, to try their well-known Menchi Katsu (minced meat cutlet) and Ham sandwiches! It had been several years since my last visit, and with their early closing time of 6 PM on weekdays, it had been difficult to find the opportunity to go, but I finally made it.
Choushiya was established in 1927 and is famous for being the birthplace of potato croquettes. The exterior reflects its long history, with an atmosphere that feels nostalgic and warm.
I visited around noon, during the busy lunch rush. To my surprise, the shop was relatively quiet. What caught my attention, however, was that most of the sandwiches were sold out! The only ones left were the Menchi Katsu and Ham sandwiches, which really shows how popular they are.
Choushiya is known for its croquettes, and the sandwiches filled with croquettes are especially popular. Even though many of the sandwiches were sold out during my visit, I was told that they can make more upon order, though it seems they’re limited by the availability of bread.
Choushiya’s sandwiches are made with either regular bread or “koppe-pan” (soft roll bread). If you choose regular bread, you get two pieces of croquette, making the sandwich very hearty and filling.
This is the Menchi Katsu Sandwich with regular bread. Menchi katsu is minced cutlet. The exterior is crispy, and the inside is juicy with a rich meaty flavor. The crunch of the onions adds a nice touch, and the large portion makes it perfect for lunch. I personally enjoy lightly toasting the sandwiches here to enhance the flavor.
Next up is the Ham Katsu Sandwich with regular bread. Hamu katsu is ham cutlet. The simple ingredients really shine here. The thinly sliced ham fits perfectly in the sandwich, and the mustard adds a nice, tangy accent.
Choushiya’s sandwiches are made with great care, and you can really feel the quality and attention to detail. Despite going after noon, many items were already sold out, a clear sign of their popularity. While the prices have changed slightly, the shop’s nostalgic atmosphere, warm service, and the classic blue wrapping paper remain just as they always were, providing a comforting and familiar experience.
