It was incredibly hot when I visited Matsumoto in midsummer! 😅 Knowing it would be sweltering, I had a non-negotiable condition when choosing a hotel: “Close to the station and with a large public bath.” That’s how I came across the Matsumoto Tourist Hotel (松本ツーリストホテル).
The hotel is a 10-story building, conveniently located about a 5-minute walk from JR Matsumoto Station. It’s also close to the bus terminal, making it ideal for travelers who use buses. If you’re planning to visit Matsumoto Performing Arts Centre, it’s only about a 10-minute walk away, making it a great base for sightseeing.
The reception is on the second floor, accessible by stairs or an elevator. While the building has an old-fashioned charm, it’s been renovated and is very comfortable.
There’s also a water dispenser, and amenities are thoughtfully arranged in a self-serve corner near the reception.
I stayed in a 12㎡ single room with a 120cm semi-double bed, which was very comfortable.
The room was compact but had everything I needed: a TV, kettle, air conditioning, refrigerator, humidifying air purifier, and Wi-Fi. Instead of curtains, the window had a sliding door, which effectively blocked out light – a big plus for someone like me who prefers a dark room for sleeping.
View out of the window.
Bathroom
The hotel has a large public bath on the basement floor, featuring “activated magnetized water.” Named “Kabocha no Yu (Pumpkin Bath)”, it’s open not only in the evening but also from 5 AM to 10 AM, perfect for enjoying a refreshing morning bath. It was the perfect way to unwind after a hot day!
I think the name comes from this…
One of the hotel’s unique features is its Tea Lounge and Tea Library. These relaxing spaces are open for free use from 3 PM to 11 PM and 6 AM to 11 AM, allowing you to enjoy tea at your leisure.
Especially between 3:00 PM and 8:00 PM, the tea is regularly replenished, allowing you to enjoy it at its freshest.
Additionally, from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM, welcome sweets are provided, which you can enjoy along with the tea.
I gratefully enjoyed them. Since I didn’t have much time, I chose the packaged ones to take with me. But they paired perfectly with the delicious tea and were gone in seconds!
A bookshelf filled with various items, primarily manga books.
They had some truly nostalgic comic books that I couldn’t help but get absorbed in. I was delighted to learn that you can take any book you’re interested in back to your room!
Matsumoto Tourist Hotel offers a convenient location suitable for both sightseeing and business, with comfortable facilities. The large public bath provided a relaxing experience, and the tea lounge offered a cozy space to enjoy tea and comic books. With prices typically around 6,000 yen per night for a stay without meals, it’s both affordable and highly recommended.
