Giolitti, a gelateria originating from Rome, Italy, opened its first store in Japan in Shinjuku in 2021 (now closed). Following this, a second location was launched at Yurakucho Marui. This Yurakucho branch is the world’s first Giolitti to open as a café dining establishment. Unlike a typical gelateria, it operates entirely as a café. During lunchtime, it was bustling with office workers.
Giolitti was established in 1900 in Rome, Italy. When I visited the flagship store, I was struck by its historical, majestic ambiance. Large windows facing Bic Camera allowed bright sunlight to flood the space, creating a pleasant atmosphere.
At the entrance, you’ll find a gelato showcase. You can purchase gelato to-go without dining at the café.
I ordered gelato at the café because I wanted to sit down and enjoy it. While individual items are available, they’re pricier than purchasing gelato at the entrance. And, the drink set offers great value, so I recommend opting for the set if you’re dining in.
The gelato lineup.
I ordered the Double gelato set and chose strawberry and pistachio (+110 yen).
The gelato I had at the flagship store in Rome felt like it was about 1.5 times larger than this. But considering the cold weather, it was just the right amount. The strawberry flavor had a sorbet-like texture with a refreshing crunch, offering a delightful balance of fresh tartness and sweetness. The pistachio was creamy and smooth, with a rich milky flavor. Both were absolutely delicious.
The coffee I ordered alongside the gelato was light and easy to drink, which was perfect for warming up my chilled body.
For payment, the system required you to take a tag from the table and bring it to the register.
