Tokyo: Seasonal Seri Soba at Menya Shichisai (麺や 七彩) in Hatchobori

Tokyo

I absolutely love seri (Japanese parsley), which is also one of the ingredients in the traditional Seven Herbs, but it’s not a common ingredient used in restaurants, is it? Maybe just at Taimeian? So, when I heard that Menya Shichisai (麺や 七彩) in Hatchobori was serving seri soba from December, I had to go check it out!

In December, they were serving seri soba with a soy sauce-based broth. When I visited on January 4, it was the salt-flavored seri soba. Hatchobori, being in a business district, was pretty quiet during the holidays, and by New Year’s, there was almost no one around. But of course, there was a line in front of Menyaya Shichisai. Right inside the entrance, there’s a space where the noodles are made. You can see the chefs hand-making the noodles, which was fascinating to watch.

The shop is in Hatchobori, but the closest stations are Hatchobori Station, Kyobashi Station, or Kayabacho Station, all roughly equidistant. You can also walk straight down Yaesu-dori from Tokyo Station’s Yaesu Exit to get there easily.

While my main goal this time was the limited-edition dish, their regular menu also looked tempting. The soups are divided into soy sauce, salt, and dried sardine (niboshi) flavors.

They also have a lot of limited-edition options! I came for the seri soba, but I was momentarily tempted by the other options, too.

I ordered the Salt-Flavored Seri Soba with an Ajitama. Sticking to my original plan!

Salt-flavored Seri Soba (塩芹そば, 1400 yen) + Ajitama (味玉, 200 yen)

The seri was harvested from Miseki, Akita Prefecture. There was so much of it, including the roots! The slight crunch of the seri combined with its amazing fragrance made it a standout ingredient. The salt-based broth, free of artificial flavorings, was mild and complemented the strong character of the seri. The roots might make you worry about a muddy flavor, but there was none of that at all! In fact, hardcore fans might find it too mild.

The hand-kneaded, curly noodles had an irregular shape, likely by design. The varying texture and the way they paired differently with the broth and seri added an enjoyable variety to each bite. Other toppings included green onions, chicken, and radish sprouts. The seasoned egg had a wonderfully creamy yolk.🎵

The chicken was also tender and delicious.

Menyaya Shichisai uses carefully selected ingredients, with a particular focus on domestic produce.
