I didn’t use to enjoy strolling around to sample food, but recently, I’ve become very intrigued by trying different foods in Chinatown. This time, I specifically wanted to eat Peking duck, so I went to Chukagai Daihanten (中華街大飯店). Peking duck—usually served around a round table—that you can easily enjoy with one hand? How amazing! Chukagai Daihanten is a large restaurant offering an all-you-can-eat option. Established in 1955, it’s a long-standing, well-known spot. Quite a few restaurants here have takeaway counters like this one in a corner of their building.
The takeaway corner always has a line of people. There’s an eat-in space further inside.
It has a counter-like area and a few chairs further in. It seems to be a place that occasionally gets featured in the media.
The takeaway menu includes Peking duck, pork buns, shark fin soup, soft-serve ice cream, and candied strawberries. The prices are quite reasonable, making it easy to try different items. Oh, and the beer is inexpensive!
This is the Peking Duck. If you stand at the counter, you can watch them skillfully prepare the Peking Duck right in front of you. The Peking Duck is neatly arranged for easy eating, just like this.
The Peking Duck is wrapped in rice paper along with cucumber, green onions, and other ingredients. The sweet bean sauce adds a delicious flavor, and the aroma of the Peking Duck is fantastic. The skin is crispy, with just a little bit of meat attached. People often say the meat of Peking Duck isn’t particularly tasty, but it really complements the crispy skin.
This is the Shark Fin Soup. While the presence of shark fin isn’t very noticeable, making it feel a bit pricey, it’s still quite tasty.
The soup includes enoki mushrooms, shiitake mushrooms, and a touch of shark fin. It’s surprisingly filling. The soup is thick and has a light flavor, making it a perfect match for the Peking Duck, with its sweet bean sauce as an accent. There’s also a three-item set that includes Peking Duck, Shark Fin Soup, and a meat bun, which is ideal for those who want to have a satisfying meal in one place.
