I’ve been to Osaka many times, but this was my first time visiting this area—Awaza. My destination was a café located here: Kissa Suigei (喫茶 水鯨). This incredibly retro building, Kawaguchi Apartment, is situated in the former Kawaguchi Settlement area. Originally, this location was home to Osaka’s first-ever café, Kissa Kisaragi (カッフェー・キサラギ).
This café is located at the far left. The curtains visible through the window already sparked my excitement. Kissa Suigei opened in 2021, carrying on the interior design of Kanazawa’s former “Kissa Kin’enshitsu (珈琲館 禁煙室)”. The café was nearly full that day, so I couldn’t capture photos of the table seating, but the classic stained glass was absolutely stunning.
The counter seat at the back, where I sat, looked like this.
Here is the drink menu. The three-color float is particularly popular. Unfortunately, I forgot to take a picture of the food menu, but they offer toast, Napolitan spaghetti, hamburger steak set meals, and more.
The reason I forgot to photograph the food menu? Because the morning menu was just too tempting! Seeing it made me determined to come back during morning hours. The cinnamon sugar toast is said to recreate the taste of Kin’enshitsu as closely as possible.
I ordered the homemade pudding and the Suigei Blend.
I love café-style pudding! This one was slightly firm, with a pleasantly bitter caramel sauce and just the right amount of whipped cream. It wasn’t overly sweet, making it easy to eat—so much so that I could have ordered another one!
As for the Suigei Blend, the coffee here is house-roasted. The photo turned out quite bright, but even so, the coffee itself had remarkable clarity. It was light yet aromatic, easy on the stomach, and simply delicious. It was so refreshing that it almost felt like drinking a warm cold brew—if that makes sense!
