Zentsuji: Simple Udon at Miyagawa Seimenjo (宮川製麺所)

UNCATEGORIZED

After getting off at Zentsuji Station, my first stop was a slightly late breakfast. Naturally, it had to be udon! I headed to Miyagawa Seimenjo (宮川製麺所), which is not just a restaurant but an actual noodle factory. I’ve tried udon from other seimenjo-style places like Gamō Udon and Hinode Seimensho, but this one is almost completely self-service!

It’s about a 30-minute walk from JR Zentsuji Station. Since it’s near Zentsuji Temple, it’s in a convenient spot if you plan to stop by on your way there.

When you enter, you first grab a bowl and chopsticks, choose your portion size of udon, and have the staff place the noodles in your bowl. Then, you head over to the pot and warm up the noodles yourself before adding broth. The warm broth is said to have a lot of dried sardines (iriko) settled at the bottom, and you’re free to scoop them up if you’d like. I believe they also have a cold broth option. Tempura and other toppings are, of course, self-service.

Once you’ve picked everything you want, you sit down in the eat-in space and enjoy your meal. After finishing, return your dishes to the collection area and pay based on the honor system. That’s it! The eat-in space is a bit rustic, but thanks to the warmth of the handmade wooden interior, it has a cozy and inviting atmosphere.

Here’s the udon. A single serving (¥210) comes in this portion, similar to Gamou Udon. The thin noodles pair wonderfully with the gentle, flavorful broth. I actually came here specifically for the dried sardines settled at the bottom of the broth, but in the process of warming my noodles and getting everything ready, I completely forgot to scoop them up! I was so tempted to line up again just for the iriko. I guess that means I’ll have to come back! 😆
