Osaka: Authentic Akashiyaki Experience at Bubutei (ぶぶ亭)

OSAKA

When it comes to local foods in the Kansai region, Akashiyaki is just as popular as Okonomiyaki and Takoyaki. However, unlike those dishes, Akashiyaki is hard to find in Kanto region, including Tokyo. That’s why trying Akashiyaki is a must when you visit Osaka. One popular place to enjoy Akashiyaki in Osaka is Bubutei (ぶぶ亭), located in the underground area of the Umeda Station building.

The Umeda underground mall is packed with shops, restaurants, and various services, making it a convenient and bustling spot to explore. Bubutei is situated within this lively area, perfect for grabbing a quick bite during your visit.

Bubutei keeps its menu simple, offering just three dishes: Takoyaki, Akashiyaki, and Takoyaki au Gratin. While the food selection is limited, they also offer drinks, and all items are available for TO GO.

BWe decided to share one portion of Akashiyaki and ordered drinks—Coke and Oolong Tea—to go with it. Both drinks are priced at 300 yen each.

Why was I holding the straw, you ask? The straw was so thin and light that it floated and popped out of the glass unless I held it down!

Now, let’s talk about the star of the show: Akashiyaki. Originally a local specialty of Akashi in Hyogo Prefecture, this dish was highly recommended by a friend from Kobe. It looks similar to Takoyaki, with pieces of octopus inside, but the dough is made primarily of eggs. This unique texture has earned it the nickname “Tamagoyaki” (egg pancake).

The way to enjoy Akashiyaki is to dip it into a clear dashi soup before eating. The soup is light yet flavorful, enriched with the umami of kombu and dried bonito. It even reminded me of Dashimaki Tamago (Japanese rolled omelet with soup stock). The fresh aroma of mitsuba (Japanese parsley) added a delightful touch. Honestly, I could have eaten a portion all by myself!
