Hakodate: A Historic Beauty in Autumn at Restored Former Hakodate Ward Public Hall (旧函館区公会堂)

Hokkaido

After three years of restoration work, the Former Hakodate Ward Public Hall (旧函館区公会堂) reopened to the public on April 26, 2021. This was my first time seeing the hall, as my last visit to Hakodate was several years ago. The contrast of yellow and blue on this building is stunningly beautiful!

Built in 1910, this colonial-style building is a nationally designated Important Cultural Property. Although I only admired the exterior this time, the interior is also open to the public (details available on the official website). Inside, there’s a “Haikara Costume Room” where visitors can try on vintage-style dresses and take photos (separate fees apply).

I visited during the autumn season, hoping to see fall foliage, and the scene didn’t disappoint. The symmetrical structure combines classic Western design elements with Japanese influences, such as tiled roofs and intricate arabesque patterns. These features beautifully harmonize with Hakodate’s scenic streets.

The vibrant fall colors at Hachimanzaka were an additional highlight of the trip.
