Karatsu: Explore the Historic Former Karatsu Bank (旧唐津銀行 辰野金吾記念館) and Its Architectural Splendor

Saga

In Karatsu, when it comes to sightseeing, the former Karatsu Bank (旧唐津銀行) is often mentioned alongside Karatsu Castle. This place is especially loved by enthusiasts of old buildings. Karatsu Bank was established in 1886. The building, which was the main branch of Karatsu Bank, was completed in 1912 and remained in operation until 1997. It was then donated to Karatsu City and designated as an important cultural asset by Saga Prefecture. Now, visitors can freely explore the inside during opening hours.

This building was supervised and constructed by the architect, Kingo Tatsuno (辰野金吾), known as the father of modern architecture. It’s truly remarkable that it has been preserved in such a splendid condition. Tatsuno, who studied in England, incorporated the Victorian style into the design. He is originally from Karatsu City.

Let’s head inside right away. To the left, you can see the statue of Tetsuzo Sone (曽根達蔵). The first floor was once the location where actual banking services were provided. If you watch old movies, the atmosphere was often this grand. It was in 1997, wasn’t it? I kind of wish I had opened an account at a bank like this. By the way, photography is generally allowed everywhere.

It looks like a ballroom could be held here.

This is an Art Nouveau-style chandelier.

Here is a building that still exists, designed by Tatsuno. In fact, at the same time Tatsuno was building Karatsu Bank, he was also working on the design of Tokyo Station’s main building, so he entrusted this project to his disciple, Minoru Tanaka (田中実).

There’s a staircase, so let’s head up to the second floor. The second floor of the bank. It’s pretty thrilling. Plus, there’s a red carpet.

The former executive office. By the way, all the rooms have fireplaces, and I think they can still be used.

Each fireplace is designed differently.

There is actually a mysterious spiral staircase here as well. It’s a staircase to the attic, and it was actually used, but I wonder how one would get up there…

The former general meeting room has been turned into an exhibition space. It features information about Tatsuno and Tanaka, modern architecture, and the history of Saga.

The atrium is also beautiful.

The VIP room. As the name suggests, this was a special room for VIPs at the time. It definitely has a different feel compared to the other rooms.

This building is available for free photo shoots during opening hours, such as for wedding photos, so it’s also recommended for such occasions.
