Funabashi: Takeoka-Style Ramen at Ramen Dokoro Maruha (らーめん処 まるは)

Chiba

The Maruha Group, a dominating presence in Funabashi’s ramen scene, has taken a bold step by closing its tonkotsu ramen shop and opening a new establishment in its place: Ramen Dokoro Maruha (らーめん処 まるは). This time, they’re specializing in Takeoka-style ramen, made with Miyashoyu soy sauce, famously used by “Umenoya (梅乃家)” the originator of Takeoka-style ramen. However, the ramen here had a slightly different vibe compared to what I usually imagine as Takeoka-style. Still, it was delicious! I’ve already visited multiple times!

Ramen Dokoro Maruha is conveniently located a short walk from JR Funabashi Station. Simply head straight down the station’s front street towards Keisei Funabashi Station, and you’ll find it just past the station.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t snap a picture of the ticket vending machine because the place got crowded quickly. Instead, here’s a glimpse of the menu. All ramen options here are soy sauce-based, staying true to the Takeoka style.

Being a fan of shredded white leek, I always go for this option: Ramen with green onion. While the basic ramen is ¥900, you might think this one’s a bit pricey. But considering it comes topped with three thick, melt-in-your-mouth slices of roast pork, it’s actually a steal! Plus, there’s plenty of green onion, not to mention the default onion toppings. It’s a green onion lover’s dream!

The sharp soy sauce-based broth may differ from what’s traditionally imagined as Takeoka-style—less dark, with rich umami from the meat stock. It’s more like classic soy sauce ramen. The thin noodles pair perfectly!

And then there’s the roast pork—look at it! So thick and hearty! If you go for the special ramen, you get a total of seven slices! While it may be up for debate whether this truly qualifies as “Takeoka-style,” it’s hands down my favorite soy sauce ramen right now. A timeless soy sauce broth that never gets boring!

Adding grated garlic gives it an extra punch!
