What surprised me the most during my visit in Hawaii ? The International Market Place. A few years ago, this area resembled a lush forest. Now, it has been reborn as a modern shopping mall—what a transformation!
When I last visited, it was still under construction. This time, I was astonished to see how much progress had been made. Although some areas were still being finalized, the change was dramatic.
The market was beautifully lit for Chinese New Year, giving it a mystical atmosphere.
Back in 2012, the International Market Place looked completely different—a forest-like setting with souvenir stalls, snack vendors, and even tattoo shops. It felt more like a flea market than a shopping mall.
Reopened in 2016 after two years of redevelopment, the International Market Place now features about 100 shops and restaurants. Impressively, the 160-year-old banyan tree remains the centerpiece of the mall—a nod to its rich history.
Despite its modern design, the mall retains a natural ambiance with Hawaiian plants scattered throughout. Walking inside feels like stepping into a forest, which is both calming and nostalgic.
There are plenty of benches and chairs, making it a perfect spot to relax—even if you’re not shopping.
While the mall offers an impressive selection, many of the shops and restaurants are similar to those found in Ala Moana Center and Royal Hawaiian Center. I had hoped for more unique options.
Additionally, they no longer host the farmers market that was once a highlight of this place. Fortunately, you can still enjoy a farmers market at Hyatt Regency Waikiki on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
