I recently visited Hokkaido, a region renowned for its seafood. While I indulged in the fresh catch, I was also craving some Jingisukan, a traditional lamb barbecue dish. So, I headed to Genghis Khan Meimei-tei (ジンギスカン羊羊亭), conveniently located near the Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse in Hakodate.

The restaurant is divided into two sections: one for Jingisukan and the other for soup curry. The soup curry area has a cozy café-like vibe. When I entered, the staff greeted me and asked, “Jingisukan or curry?” I replied enthusiastically, “Jingisukan!” and was directed to the left-hand area for barbecue dining.

Each table has a call button for placing orders, making it easy to get assistance.
The weekdays’ lunch menu offers a variety of Jingisukan sets. Some options come pre-grilled, but I opted for the Raw Lamb Meat Jingisukan Set to enjoy the full grilling experience. All sets include rice, soup, and a drink, which can be chosen from non-alcoholic options or a small glass of Sapporo Classic beer. Prices are tax-exclusive, and due to the consumption tax increase from 8% to 10%, they might have risen slightly.

As soon as I placed my order, the staff lit the grill at my table and brought the ingredients over.

The lamb was fresh and served in generous slices, which were tender and flavorful.

Free refills of vegetables like soybean sprouts and onions are also offered, making the meal even more satisfying. I couldn’t resist a second helping of veggies!

There are two sauces available: a tangy salt sauce and a sweet soy-based sauce. I preferred the salt sauce, which complemented the lamb perfectly.

The staff recommended grilling the lamb to medium rare to retain its tenderness and rich flavor. Every bite was a delight, especially when paired with rice. I could have eaten it endlessly!

Although Jingisukan can be found in Tokyo, the freshness of the ingredients in Hokkaido is unparalleled, and the prices are more reasonable. If you’re planning a trip to Hakodate, this is a must-try experience.
