One of the joys of traveling for me is enjoying a breakfast at a café. Matsumoto has many charming coffee shops, making it hard to decide where to go. This time, I chose Coffee Sabou Kamenoya (珈琲茶房かめのや). I’ve always been curious about there, but since I usually stay close to the station, I hadn’t had the chance to visit until now.
This time, I noticed that Coffee Bigaku Abe, a café near my hotel, had a line of about 20 people waiting. Seeing the line, I thought I could visit Kamenoya and return in time. It worked out perfectly as Kamenoya hadn’t opened yet, so I got in right away.
It’s a short walk from the station (about 10 minutes), but it’s conveniently located near Yohashira Shrine and Nawate Street, making it perfect for sightseeing.
Though Kamenoya is relatively new, it inherited the building and furnishings from Okinado Sabo (翁堂茶房), a tea room established in 1959. This gives the café a nostalgic charm. While there seems to be a second floor, it’s occupied by coffee bean bags, so it doesn’t appear to be used as seating. It’s incredibly nostalgic.
The water is self-service and located near the entrance, which means you get to wander around and admire the beautiful interior.
Since there were no other customers, I was able to take my time exploring. The café offered canelés among its sweets and accepted PayPay, blending a traditional coffee shop ambiance with the functionality of a modern café.
Here’s the morning menu at Kamenoya, served from 8:00 AM to 10:30 AM. At first glance, the price might seem slightly high for a coffee shop morning set. But look at it—so hearty!
I sat by a window overlooking the garden. While the garden wasn’t exactly well-maintained, it added an aged charm that I found appealing.
The Morning Set lets you choose from blend coffee, hot tea, milk, or apple juice. I opted for the blend coffee, which had a clean taste—mildly caffeinated yet easy to drink.
If you prefer a different drink, you can order the plate alone (750 yen) and get 100 yen off your drink. The plate includes thick toast, a boiled egg, salad, ham, and red cabbage. The toast was crispy on the outside and absolutely delightful.
The salad dressing was sweet and tangy, and very refreshing.
Since I was there, I decided to order the pudding as well. The pudding was generously topped with caramel. It was served on a silver plate, with whipped cream and a cherry on top. The caramel had a slight bitterness and a moderate sweetness. The pudding itself wasn’t too sweet and had a firm texture, which I really liked.
