I went straight to Kawase (かわせ) located near Yanagibashi Market, for lunch right after arriving in Nagoya by Shinkansen. It’s on the ground floor of a building called “Ekimae Yokocho,” which is an interesting spot and within walking distance of Nagoya Station.
The alley is narrow, almost like an eel bed, and Kawase is situated in the center. They only serve lunch on weekdays.
The lunch menu features their specialty: beef tongue. While they also serve it at dinner, the lunch set offers great value. The most popular choice is the beef tongue set (牛タン定食).
I decided to order 1.5 portion of beef tongue set. One portion costs 1750 yen, and the set includes hiyayakko (cold tofu), miso soup, and rice. You can get a large serving of rice for free.
The beef tongue is grilled over charcoal and then cut into rectangular slices. It’s lightly seasoned with salt and pepper, allowing the natural flavor of the meat to shine through. The inside is medium-rare, and it comes with sliced lemon, which I squeezed over the meat for added flavor.
It pairs well with rice, but I couldn’t help but imagine how delicious it would be with some alcoholic drinks! I’ll have to return for dinner next time to enjoy it with a drink.
At dinner, you can enjoy the beef tongue and other dishes with alcoholic beverages. Many people who have tried the lunch set likely return in the evening to experience the full menu. The restaurant gets quite hot because they keep grilling the meat.
