Osaka: Breakfast at Udon Kyutaro, A Refreshing Start to the Day

OSAKA

Enjoying udon in the morning is one of my favorite things to do when visiting Osaka. Unfortunately, my go-to udon shop stopped serving in the morning. So, I had to quickly find another good udon shop. Luckily, I came across Udon Kyutaro. The name ‘Kyutaro’ sounded cute to me, and it made sense once I realized it’s located in Kyutaro Town.

Udon Kyutaro is open from 7:00–10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. Naturally, I visited in the morning. When I arrived around 8:00 a.m. on a weekday, about half of the shop was already occupied. The chef used to work at my beloved Udon Baka Ichidai in Takamatsu and Yoshiya in Marugame. I knew I’d love their udon even before trying it.

The menu has a limited selection during breakfast hours.

Here’s the regular menu. A smaller portion costs 50 yen less.

There are no seats here—it’s a stand-up-eating shop. The space can accommodate around eight people at a time.

Each table is stocked with seasonings, green onions, and crispy tenkasu.

I ordered the limited-time menu item, Mizore Tsukimi. You can choose between warm and cold, and I opted for cold. “Mizore” refers to grated daikon radish, and “tsukimi” means egg yolk. The dish features cold soup with daikon radish, sprouts, kombu seaweed, and a raw egg.

Since I wasn’t very hungry, I ordered the small portion—and I regretted it! It was so delicious I could have easily eaten the regular size. The refreshing soup, springy udon texture, and the combination of daikon radish and sprouts made each bite refreshing. I’m confident Udon Kyutaro will become my regular breakfast spot in Osaka!

At the cashier, you’ll find a variety of tempura to choose from, each priced at 100 yen. Although the tempura was cold, it was still tasty. I picked the squid leg tempura, which was large and had a springy texture. It was so good!
