It took me three years to decide on the perfect spot for my first taste of stinky tofu. I finally chose Li Zhang Bo Stinky Tofu King (里長伯臭豆腐王) in Ningxia Night Market. Located around the middle of the market, the shop has both a stall and an indoor seating area, but I opted for the latter.
At first, simply walking past a stinky tofu shop felt like the end of the world, but over time, I got used to it. Now I can casually pass by thinking, “Oh, it’s that smell again.”😂
The interior is quite spacious, with bright orange tables that give the shop a lively feel.
There’s an order sheet available at the entrance, but most people seemed to just order directly with the staff. When it was my turn, I showed the order sheet and pointed to what I wanted. Most customers ordered stinky tofu and oyster and intestine noodles (蚵仔大腸麺線) together. After ordering, simply take a seat and wait for your food. Payment is made at the exit after you finish eating. Apart from stinky tofu, the menu also includes noodles, wontons, and more.
Deep-fried stinky tofu is a great option for beginners because the frying process reduces much of the smell. I tried it for NT$50.
It smelled less intense than I expected, though you can still notice it when bringing it closer to your face. The tofu comes with a sweet and savory sauce (top left), pickled cabbage (bottom), and additional spicy sauce available at the table. The tofu was crispy on the outside without being too greasy.
The texture inside was fluffy, similar to deep-fried koya tofu. However, eating a whole block of tofu by myself did get a bit overwhelming. I noticed a nearby pair sharing one order of stinky tofu while also enjoying noodles, and I thought, “Yep, that’s the way to go”😊
The shop also has a stall with a smaller menu. It’s a good choice if you want a more authentic night market experience.
