Taipei: Famous Beef Noodles at Liu Shan Dong (劉山東牛肉麵) near Taipei station

TAIWAN

When it comes to Taiwanese cuisine, minced pork rice and beef noodles are probably the first dishes that come to mind. If you’re traveling from Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport to Taipei Main Station, you’re likely to feel hungry after the journey. Fortunately, there’s an excellent beef noodle shop near Taipei Main Station: Liu Shan Dong Beef Noodles (劉山東牛肉麵).

This renowned eatery has been serving delicious beef noodles for over 50 years and has even earned a spot on the Michelin Bib Gourmand list.

Liu Shan Dong is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., making it a great option for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. During my first visit, I arrived just after lunchtime, but the place was packed. After a short wait, I was seated at a shared table with a couple. Most of the patrons seemed to be locals, and the staff primarily spoke Mandarin, so basic phrases or a translation app might come in handy.

They are located along such a narrow alley.

The menu is written in Chinese on the wall, but an English, Korean, and Japanese menu with photos is also available upon request—just ask the staff.

If you’re feeling adventurous, try some of the side dishes, like pickled vegetables, displayed near the kitchen. These small plates cost only 20 TWD each and pair wonderfully with the main dishes.

On my first visit, I tried braised beef noodles. The noodles were slightly similar to udon, and the soup was rich with beefy flavors, complemented by tender, simmered beef tendon.

While the braised noodles were fantastic, I found myself preferring clear beef noodles. The soup had a garlicky aroma that suited my taste perfectly. The beef, possibly rib meat, was tender and juicy.

The beef is, as you see, soft and juicy. It’s not beef tendon. I think it’s rib ?

A must-try condiment at Liu Shan Dong is their douchi (fermented black beans), available on each table. Slightly spicy, it enhances the flavors of the noodles. The staff recommends enjoying the noodles as-is before adding douchi for an extra kick.

If you finish your soup, you can ask the staff for a refill at no extra charge. During my visit, I noticed a customer drinking the entire bowl of soup before asking for seconds. Next time, I’ll definitely follow their example!
