I came to the Shinmai Media Garden building in Matsumoto to enjoy the local beer. At the Matsumoto Brewery Tap Room Honmachi (マツモトブルワリータップルーム本町店) here, you can casually enjoy a draft beer from Matsumoto Brewery starting with just one glass. It’s a very modern building.
On the third floor, you’ll find the Matsumoto Brewery Tap Room Honmachi. It feels like a café. Before heading there, I made a detour to visit the souvenir shops on the first and second floors. Matsumoto Brewery is a relatively new brewery that was founded in 2016.
There were seven types of draft beer on the menu that day. They also offered a variety of snacks, with pizza being the most meal-like option. The pizza looked really delicious.
As I mentioned earlier, the interior has a café-like atmosphere and feels spacious. Although there are roll-up screens, there is also a terrace seating area outside. The chairs, however, aren’t very comfortable, so it’s not a place for long stays. Additionally, because the seating is quite close together, I felt a bit overwhelmed when I visited, as there were two large groups of foreign tourists nearby.
This time, I had two half-pints. The first was Awesome / Pale Ale. The surprising thing was that it had almost no foam. It had a refreshing citrus flavor, with a bitterness that gave it a crisp finish. It’s a white beer made with several types of American hops.
The second beer was a stout, the Nitro Castle Stout. With nitro, the creamy foam was a highlight. The color of this stout was said to be inspired by Matsumoto Castle. It had a rich, deep flavor reminiscent of black coffee and was very tasty!
