Nishimura (にし邑) is a long-established tonkatsu restaurant that is only open on weekdays. I love their tonkatsu, but since it’s a bit heavy for me, I prefer to enjoy it at lunchtime rather than dinner.

The restaurant has only counter seating, with limited space behind the seats. The kitchen is staffed by 3-4 people who work efficiently in the small space.

On the counter, you’ll find various seasonings. The white bottle contains dressing for cabbage, while the rest include tonkatsu sauce, soy sauce, mayonnaise, and mustard. I love that they serve mustard in a small pot—it lets me use as much as I like!

The menu primarily focuses on tonkatsu sets, which include rice, shredded cabbage, pickles, and pork soup (tonjiru). They don’t offer standalone tonkatsu without rice.

At dinnertime, you can also find side dishes like potato salad and deep-fried items to pair with drinks. Drinks are available, but during lunch, they only serve beer.

This time, I ordered the superior loin cutlet set, which came with a generous portion of shredded cabbage (free refills), rice, pickles, and tonjiru. The “superior” set also includes rock salt, which they recommend using to enhance the flavor of the tonkatsu.

The tonkatsu was perfectly fried—crispy on the outside and surprisingly light on the fat inside.

They cook the meat at a low temperature, resulting in a juicy cutlet with a slight pink center. It paired wonderfully with the rock salt and mustard. I found it very satisfying!

The pork soup was another highlight. Unlike the fatty soups you often find at other tonkatsu restaurants, theirs was rich in pork flavor without being overly heavy. I even considered ordering a second serving (200 yen)!

It’s toooo much for me. I took much time to eat it up. Though I got to there just after the opening time, person next to me changed two times :p I heard they serve furofuki daikon at dinner time. So, I want to try dinner, too !
