When staying at Yunokawa Onsen, I visited this restaurant for dinner. Opened in 2013, it’s been about 10 years since its establishment. The restaurant is called maido Ramen (らーめんmaido)—such a cute little place. The entrance is on the right, marked by the “OPEN” sign. There’s also a parking lot at the back, from which you can enter. Please note, the door on the left is not an entrance.
Just inside the entrance, there’s a counter, and on the left, a spacious raised seating area. The interior feels more like a diner than a ramen shop. It’s also famous as a favorite spot for GLAY members (especially TERU). Signatures and photos were displayed toward the back of the shop.
Here’s the food menu. When you think of Hakodate, shio ramen (salt-based ramen) comes to mind! They also serve a variety of dishes like tantanmen and toripaitan. The noodles can be swapped for rice noodles for an additional ¥250, and they also offer Muslim-friendly ramen. The most popular dish is the shio ramen, but fried rice with shiokara is also a favorite.
There’s also a range of drinks available.
It might go without saying, but the draft beer here is the familiar Sapporo Classic. While ramen alone is great, the variety of appetizers makes it fun to enjoy a drink at this ramen shop in Hakodate.
And of course, the shio ramen! Although I was very tempted by the fried rice with shiokara, I stuck to my original choice. I ordered the Shio Ramen with a Butter topping. The ramen comes with toppings like fu (wheat gluten), bamboo shoots, komatsuna (Japanese mustard spinach), green onions, and roast pork.
The broth, made from pork and chicken, is beautifully clear and pairs wonderfully with the butter. It’s the kind of soup you can finish guilt-free♪
The slightly curly noodles are thin and go perfectly with the broth. As for the roast pork, it’s tender and juicy. My only small complaint is that the beer didn’t pair well with the ramen. It’s the perfect ramen for a post-drink meal. I realized the ideal combination might be enjoying the fried rice with shiokara with beer first, followed by this shio ramen as a satisfying finale!
There are so many other dishes I’d like to try, including some secret menu items, so I’ll definitely visit again next time I’m in Hakodate. Regulars recommended the tantanmen, too!
