Though there are many restaurants open at lunchtime and dinner, only a few are open in the morning. Shatenki Nigouten (謝甜記 貮号店) opens at 8:30 a.m. on weekdays and at 8:00 a.m. on weekends, making it a rare gem! Their porridge has a refreshing taste and is perfect for breakfast. By the way, there’s a Santa Claus figure in front of the shop all year round.
The head shop opens at 10:00 a.m. on weekdays and at 9:00 a.m. on weekends.
Although the restaurant looks small from the outside, it has about 50 seats. If there are no available seats, you can take their food to-go and enjoy it in the park.
This is the lunch menu, available from opening time on weekdays.
If you just want porridge, you can order it from the regular menu.
I ordered the B set (Bセット, 860 yen) from the lunch menu, which includes a small portion of porridge, spring rolls, shaomai, and dessert. Here are the spring rolls and shaomai. They were pre-cooked before being ordered, so they were lukewarm, but the wrapper was crisp and delicious. The shaomai was juicy.
There’s a photo of Chinese pickles on the menu, but they don’t serve them unless you order them. The menu states, “We serve Chinese pickles at no extra charge,” and they are so tasty that I recommend ordering them.
This is the porridge. It was lightly seasoned with salt, and topped with Chinese deep-fried dough, green onions, coriander, and wolfberries.
It’s really suitable for breakfast.
Shatenki’s porridge comes in two sizes: Regular (普通) and Small (中碗). The porridge in the lunch set is small, so if you want a larger portion, you should order the regular size.
Dessert after the meal: Almond jelly, which also includes canned fruit.
