Asakusa: Nostalgic Yakiniku Dinner at Taiseien (大成苑)

Tokyo

During a casual outing, I had the chance to visit Taiseien (大成苑), a cozy yakiniku restaurant in Asakusa with a nostalgic atmosphere, much like Mizuguchi Shokudo. We hadn’t made a reservation, but arriving right at the opening time, we were seated immediately.

Taiseien is conveniently located near Asakusa Station on the Tsukuba Express line. The area is known for its many yakiniku spots and is sometimes referred to as a “Korean Town”. It’s also close to Hisago-dori Street, making it a great spot to stop by when exploring the neighborhood.

The interior features four main tables with distinctive red chairs covered in white fabric. It feels more like a retro coffee shop than a yakiniku restaurant. If it weren’t for the grills on the tables, you might forget you’re in a barbecue spot!

But make no mistake—this is definitely a yakiniku restaurant!

In addition to the grilled meats, Taiseien offers meat sashimi and Korean dishes.

The highlight of the menu is the Maki Rosu (¥850 per serving), a favorite among regulars. It’s the meat surrounding the rib roast, and it’s incredibly flavorful. We ordered six servings!

The shio (salt) version, with its bold seasoning of salt and pepper, pairs perfectly with beer or barley shochu. The more you chew, the more the umami flavor spreads.

The tare (sauce) version feels more suited for pairing with rice. Both were excellent!

To top it off, wrapping the meat in sunny lettuce adds a refreshing twist without overshadowing the meat’s rich flavor.

A side of seasoned sunny lettuce was a delightful palate cleanser between bites of grilled meat.

Though I couldn’t try many dishes since I had already visited a few other spots that day, Taiseien left a strong impression. It’s a charming yakiniku spot that I’d love to visit again—maybe even on my own next time!
