It’s been about ten years since my last visit to Tankiyo (たん清) for dinner. While I’ve dropped by a few times for their lunch beef tongue stew, dinner was a long-overdue treat. The tongue remains as thick, large, and delicious as ever. Due to its popularity and the limited number of seats, securing a reservation is fiercely competitive.
Tankiyo is about a 5-minute walk from JR Akihabara Station, and it’s also close to Suehirocho Station on the subway.
Tankiyo primarily serves yakiniku (grilled meat), but their most popular item is undoubtedly the Premium Grilled Salted Beef Tongue (2200 yen), a must-order at every table. The full menu can be found on their official website (though it’s a bit tricky to navigate).
If you’re coming to Tankiyo, this is the dish you can’t skip: Superior Grilled Salted Beef Tongue. The photo below shows three servings, and you can see just how thick it is! Despite its size and fatty marbling, the tongue is surprisingly easy to bite into.
For an extra layer of flavor, order the Grilled Negi (Green Onion) Cup (300 yen), which pairs perfectly with the tongue or even with rice.
To avoid palate fatigue, we recommend alternating between the fattier parts at the center of the plate and the leaner, lighter outer sections. We learned this the hard way after diving straight into the richer pieces first (lesson for next time!).
What pairs better with fatty tongue than a refreshing beer? Tankiyo offers a wide range of options, including bottle of Kirin Ichiban Shibori, draft beer, Yebisu (small bottles), imported beers, and even non-alcoholic options.
The Kimchi Platter is perfectly portioned for three people (a bit much for two). It includes cucumber, napa cabbage, and daikon radish kimchi, all lightly tangy and refreshing—a great palate cleanser between bites of rich beef tongue.
