In Kagawa, where many udon restaurants close early, Teuchi Udon Tsurumaru (手打ちうどん 鶴丸) is a rare gem that opens from 8 PM. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a bowl of curry udon to wrap up the night. I visited after savoring bone-in chicken. Established in 1981, this long-standing eatery has a rich history. When I arrived around 8:30 PM on a weekday, there were a few open seats, though it’s often fully occupied—proof of its popularity.
The interior feels more like an izakaya than an udon shop. Warm wooden counters set a cozy tone, and a pot of simmering oden near the entrance added to the inviting atmosphere. Guests ranged from solo diners quietly slurping noodles to lively groups enjoying drinks and using the space as an izakaya. I even saw a pair of rosy-cheeked patrons who had clearly dropped by after a few drinks.
Here’s the menu. While the restaurant is famous for its curry udon, it offers a variety of udon dishes. Every batch of noodles is handmade daily, with no pre-made stock. I sat at the counter this time, right near the tempting oden, which is self-service. By the way, the operating hours are 8 PM to 2 AM.
Of course, I ordered the curry udon. It features onions, carrots, green onions, pork, and a raw egg in the center. The curry flavor is rich but complemented by a gentle dashi broth. The sweetness of the onions and carrots harmonized perfectly with the depth of the pork, while the raw egg added a smooth, creamy finish. The spiciness was mild, so I added a generous sprinkle of shichimi from the table for an extra kick.
Here’s the handmade udon, thick and chewy. The flavors aren’t overly spicy, leaning towards a comforting, homemade taste. It’s indeed perfect for finishing a night out, and I thoroughly enjoyed my bowl. Since the portion size isn’t too large, it pairs well with one or two pieces of oden
