I had breakfast at Yonehana (米花) after a one-month absence. In August, I refrained from going out for breakfast or lunch on workdays due to the extremely hot weather. Although it’s still as hot as it was in August, I can feel the steady arrival of autumn.
I noticed some eateries in Tsukiji Market had started serving saury, a representative fish of autumn. That day, Yonehana’s chef’s choice was grilled salted saury! I was thrilled to enjoy my first saury of the season at Yonehana. 🙂
So, I headed straight to Yonehana without hesitation. As soon as I sat down, these dishes were served: rice, miso soup, pickled cucumber, and oden.
You might associate oden with cold weather, but Yonehana serves it year-round. In winter, they serve oden in hot soup, while in warmer seasons, it’s in a cooler broth. 🙂 This time, it included deep-fried tofu and two thick slices of daikon radish.
After a short wait, my much-anticipated saury arrived—charcoal-grilled salted saury. Charcoal grilling will not be allowed at the new Toyosu Market. So, it’s a limited-time delight! Charcoal-grilled food has a flavor far superior to other methods of grilling.
The saury was so fatty that its oil pooled on the dish as I ate it with chopsticks. I almost felt like drinking the oil—but of course, I didn’t! :p The fish was so tender and flavorful that I could eat almost all of it, except for the head and backbone. Even the innards were delicious! By the way, you may already know that the relocation of the market has been postponed until at least February.
